  • Project Timelines - Global

I searched for Project timeline requests and only really found older requests, so I will bring it up again with a different twist.

    1. Is there any way to see more than 13.5 days at a time on the project timeline? I would love to look at and show a customer a timeline of the installation project that may be 30-60 days or more.

I also see this as a separate print option than the printing from the project that shows only what you have on the screen with 3 pages of information about service orders and other related documents prior to the current view of the timeline on the last page.

    2. It would be very helpful to have a global look at projects that are going on. We can look at portions of a project timeline in one snapshot by printing the project as above. And we can look at a week's worth of service orders (or tasks for the service orders) for all technicians on all jobs in the dispatch board. But i would love to be able to look at a month or two of projects on a single "calendar".

I see this as a simplified Gantt chart with projects listed as colored lines spanning the days they are scheduled for. It would be wonderful to have this look be exclusive to the project view in such a way that we could select the projects to view from a list of active or 'open" projects or "show all" projects for a specific timeline. Each different project would have its own color. All the days that the tasks (or stages) are schedules for would be indicated in that project's color on the chart. It would be even better if the stages or tasks were noted in text within the colored bar on the dates applicable, but maybe this is only indicated if you click on them or zoom to that level of detail. If multiple projects are scheduled during that month we can see them as multiple colored lines spanning those dates so we can better view how we will actually need to assign technicians to different locations or jobs to meet the overlapping project timelines.

I think all the information is currently in Tigerpaw, but it just is not viewable in a way that we can really look at all that we have going on for a month.

This would be greatly beneficial as a tool to show customers the timeline of their project and also as a tool to schedule everything internally when we discuss project implementations and when we can actually lock in an installation date a month in advance.

Tigerpaw is great, and it works well for service, but it seems to be lacking when scheduling projects that span more than a week or two. We currently are stuck with two huge whiteboards in our service manager's office that show 6 weeks of dates that indicate the installations (or projects) that we have going on so that we can map our service orders, tasks, etc. (for projects and service) onto the Tigerpaw dispatch board.

It would be wonderful if Tigerpaw could provide that view for us as all the information is in the software, but just cannot be viewed in the way that we need to see the projects relate to each other over a month or two.

    Thanks,

This perfectly represents my sentiments. Tigerpaw is extremely powerful, and it has a lot of cool PM features that most CRM programs don't even begin to offer. But the flip side is that to be effective for firms managing large/long projects, it still needs more. I do not need nor expect full MS Project tyeo functionality, but I am in desperate need of some of the functionality you laid out.

One of the things I have thought about (hopefully TP reads this) is that TP already has an architecture in place that with some minor modifications could be exceptionally powerful for project management. Specifically, if we could assign a start and end date for service orders, and have an option to make them appear on a calendar, service orders would work perfectly as a representation of project phases! I could divide my projects into service orders which represent phases, give those service orders a start and end date, and voila, I have a project schedule.

Any I agree with you, we are in desperate need of being able to look at some type of useful project schedule. This also relates to my request in another thread to improve the group calendar view.

We are currently finishing up a Project Timeline report. Hopefully this will solve the problem.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but.....
It would be helpful if TP followed PM standards as they are described by the PMI.
It is generally held that projects are are broken down by phases which are then broken down by tasks. Tasks are then broken down by units of work.

There are phases and tasks but they dont seem to follow the same relationship as project management standards.

          Hello Don,

I am not sure I am understanding your use of the word Task. If you mean Task as a Task in Tigerpaw or Task as Items of work done in a Phase of a Project. So I will just mention how the TP Project Management works from my point of view and then we can compare terms.

In the Tigerpaw Project Management we have a Project which you can assign Phases to, then you can assign Quotes, Service Orders, and Work Orders to the Phase (Also including the Parts and Labor assigned to the Jobs performed by the Service and Work Orders) and then give Tigerpaw Tasks that can be assigned to the Quote, Service Order, or Work Order.

So if I am not mistaken the Task that you mention would be what I call the Quote, Service Order or Work Order and the unit of work is what I would call a Tigerpaw Task.

If I am mistaken please forgive me but I am just trying to find a common ground to start from.

          Hope this helps,
          Mark

Has TP 15+ addressed the ability to see a global view of all projects on a timeline?

                Hi,

We are working on a plan for enhancements to project management in version 16. If you have specific requests, please post each of them in a new thread so the voting can be accurate for each suggestion.

                Thank you.
