Create Customer Portal Password

I am looking for instruction on how to generate a customer's portal password. I have found reference that the service provider sends a "system-generated" temporary password (not visible to the person creating the record). But, not finding how to do this. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

As soon as you save the contact in the portal, the temp password is automatically emailed to them. We then manually send that contact a welcome type of email.
